New Sexual Worlds

The University of California Press is launching the inaugural New Sexual Worlds series, edited by Marlon M. Bailey and Jeffrey Q. McCune, two leading scholars in the field of sexuality studies. This series will extend the reach of Bailey and McCune’s own interdisciplinary interests in racialized genders and sexualities within diverse geographies.

The New Sexual Worlds book series will acquire projects focused on racialized gender and sexuality studies, with attention to new sexual practices and formations within diverse, understudied geographies. This series is especially committed to scholarship that explores genders and sexualities in everyday life, within diverse regions of the U.S and throughout the world. To this end, the New Sexual Worlds series will:

  • help concretize and sustain racialized sexuality studies as a field that is integral to the examination of human life.
  • advance cutting-edge scholarship on sexuality with specific emphasis on racialized sexual identities and communities and diverse geographies.
  • continue our scholarly commitment to developing and advancing research on some of the most understudied and sometimes illegible areas of sexuality studies.
  • support the work of up-and-coming scholars, as well as senior scholars in the field of sexuality studies.

Marlon M. Bailey (Arizona State University) is an associate professor of Women and Gender Studies in the School of Social Transformation and author of Butch Queens Up in Pumps: Gender, Performance, and Ballroom Culture in Detroit.

Jeffrey Q. McCune (Washington University) is an associate professor of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies and African & African-American Studies and author of Sexual Discretion: Black Masculinity and the Politics of Passing.
