Although we are unable to see you in person at this year’s Middle East Studies Association conference, we’d still love for you to “stop by the booth” and meet with us virtually. Our Editors are taking brief Zoom appointments over the next couple of weeks.
Eric Schmidt, Editor
Religion and Premodern World History
“I acquire books in premodern history and religion, with a special emphasis on the Middle East and the Mediterranean, which complements and extends our program in the history of the modern Middle East. Our publishing program has a broad cultural studies remit, and we are especially interested in books that use a wider geographical lens to study the passage of people, things, and ideas across the boundaries of lands and languages. Recent highlights include Sean Anthony’s Muhammad and the Empires of Faith, Jack Renard’s Crossing Confessional Boundaries, and a sourcebook on Conversion to Islam in the Premodern Age.
We also have a program in World Literature in Translation, which features superior translations of major works of historical importance from around the premodern world. This collection is dedicated to a truly inclusive view of literature, covering everything from epic to lyric to folktale to history, with works from neglected traditions sitting aside more recognizable works.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out with a pitch if you’re working in these areas.”
