The Association of American Publishers (AAP) has announced the finalists for the 45th annual Professional and Scholarly Excellence (PROSE) Awards, honoring scholarly works published in 2020. UC Press is delighted to have two publications listed among the finalists.

Latin American and Latinx Visual Culture (LALVC) is a finalist for the “Best New Journal in the Humanities & Social Sciences.” This is the second prestigious honor the journal has received within a matter of weeks. Earlier this month, during the meeting of the Modern Language Association, the Council of Editors of Learned Journals (CELJ) recognized LALVC as the Best New Journal in the CELJ’s annual award presentation.

LALVC Editor-in-Chief Charlene Villaseñor Black remarks, “These recognitions confirm for us the growing importance of the fields of Latin American and Latinx visual culture. Before LALVC, there was not a single journal dedicated to the topic. We are pleased at the recognition of the growing importance of these fields, the acknowledgment of demographic changes in the US, as well as the appreciation of the universal values enshrined in the arts and humanities across the Americas. We are particularly delighted to see our vision for the journal realized. We would like to extend our sincerest thanks to UC Press, our international editorial board, our Book Reviews Editor, Aleca Le Blanc, our contributors (who trusted us with their work), and our readers and other supporters.”

The Decisive Network: Magnum Photos and the Postwar Image Market by Nadya Bair is a 2021 PROSE Humanities Finalist in Media and Cultural Studies.

Based on unprecedented archival research, The Decisive Network unravels Magnum’s mythologies to offer a new history of what it meant to shoot, edit, and sell news images after World War II. Bridging art history, media studies, cultural history, and the history of communication, The Decisive Network transforms our understanding of the photographic profession and the global circulation of images in the predigital world.

UC Press Editorial Director Kim Robinson says, “We’re proud to publish this beautifully written history of the legendary Magnum photo agency, which maps out the vast influence it had in shaping postwar visual culture.”
