We are disturbed and horrified to see the escalating violence directed against Asian Americans, in the Bay Area and around the country. These incidents have increased since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and have been encouraged by inflammatory and xenophobic rhetoric. These are not isolated events, and these sorts of attacks and discrimination are not new.
These acts damage our society and our communities, and counter the values of the press. Hate against some of us harms all of us.
UC Press stands in solidarity with our Asian and Asian-American colleagues, authors, and neighbors.
We encourage you to research and support local Asian Pacific American organizations in your community. As a starting point for the Oakland community, learn more about the Oakland Asian Cultural Center, Oakland Chinatown Coalition, and Compassion Oakland.
