UC Press is honored to share that two of our titles have been nominated by the Association of American Publishers for the 2020 PROSE Awards in their respective academic subject areas.
Starting in 1976, the PROSE Awards have “recognized publishers who produce books, journals, and digital products of extraordinary merit that make a significant contribution to a field of study in a given year.”
Over the next several weeks, AAP will reveal the Subject Category Winners, which in turn will compete for the PROSE Award in their disciplines at large. More information regarding the awards can be read here.
Congratulations to all of the nominees!

Ocean Outbreak
Confronting the Rising Tide of Marine Disease
by Drew Harvell
“Coral bleaching has become something of an everyday apocalypse. Researched, documented and foretold, it is a biotic meltdown to which we have become all too accustomed. But the seas hold other more insidious disasters, as much our fault as the heating of the oceans. They tend, though, to be less covered by the media, which is why Ocean Outbreak is such an important book. . . . [Harvell] does a first-rate job of inspiring readers, and of providing the right kind of proselytising to turn marine epidemiology into a go-to career for a new and concerned generation.”

Remaking a Life
How Women Living with HIV/AIDS Confront Inequality
by Celeste Watkins-Hayes
“Dr. Celeste Watkins-Hayes examines the resiliency of women facing incalculable challenges, and she chronicles the power of activism to change their lives for the better. By confronting what Watkins-Hayes calls the ‘injuries of inequality’ and the AIDS response, Remaking a Life urges leaders to deliver bold policy solutions to address the complicated intersection of healthcare, social support, economic assistance, and civic engagement that could tackle persistent crises such as chronic homelessness, the ever-widening drug epidemic and the ongoing battle against HIV/AIDS. She offers an under-appreciated, solutions-driven model that untangles how the public sector can help individuals and communities in crisis, and in so doing, Watkins-Hayes carves a path forward to progress.”
