University of California Press (UC Press) is seeking applications for the editorship of the journal Film Quarterly. The applicant appointed to this position will succeed Interim Editor Rebecca Prime when her term ends June, 30 2024.

Film Quarterly (FQ) has been publishing peer-reviewed articles, reviews, and interviews on all aspects of cinema, media, and society for over sixty years, earning a reputation as one of the most authoritative academic film journals in the United States, as well as an important English-language voice of cinema studies abroad. FQ is committed to advancing timely and intersectional approaches to the criticism and analysis of visual culture through exploring new perspectives on issues of diversity, race, gender, sexuality, and transnationalism.

Applicants for this position should have an advanced degree in film and media studies, or related field(s), and a distinguished scholarly record. Previous journal editorial experience is preferred, but not required. Applicants should possess strong organizational and management skills, the ability to work with others, and a commitment to publishing high quality, relevant, and engaging scholarship. 

Primary responsibilities of the Editor include:

  • Identifying topics of scholarly interest for the journal
  • Soliciting quality scholarly work on topics of interest
  • Maintaining a healthy pipeline of quality submissions
  • Overseeing the peer review and publication process
  • Making final decisions on manuscripts
  • Ensuring editorial workflows and processes run smoothly and according to schedule
  • Appointing and collaborating with Editorial Board members 
  • Liaising with UC Press staff regularly to discuss various aspects of journal publishing, journal promotion, and other journal projects

UC Press offers a modest stipend of editorial support for this position.
